Health launches awards for nurses
OTJIWARONGO, 31 AUG (NAMPA) - Nurses with the best professional conduct at work across the country now stand a chance to be rewarded money by the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS).
Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Juliet Kavetuna on Wednesday officially launched the first-ever Nursing Excellence Awards that are aimed at motivating nurses to regain trust and respect from patients.
Nearly 200 enrolled, registered and student nurses and health practitioners on Wednesday witnessed the 2017/2018 Nursing Excellence Awards ceremony at Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Kavetuna, who is a nurse by profession, said the health profession of nowadays had lost value.
“Let the great nurses who deserve the awards win and be rewarded,” Kavetuna said.
She said three methods were designed for nomination to the competition.
The awards, with 10 categories, are open to nurses working at the primary health care units, community health, maternity, paediatric and psychiatric wards.
Others to be rewarded are outstanding training institution, retired nurses including male nurses, new nurse of the year and 2018 excellent nurse of the year.
Kavetuna said any nurse can be nominated or nominate themselves via mobile phone technology or online platforms that include social media.
A radio time slot on the national broadcaster’s indigenous languages call in programmes, where callers will be allowed to mention names of nominees and their duty stations, is another method of nomination, said Kavetuna.
She explained the names entered will be checked and validated by the Health Professions Council of Namibia to confirm the nominees’ registration at the end of the competition.
She said voting for the preferred names of best nurses has started and will go on until 10 May 2018.
Nurses found practicing good general nursing and conducting themselves professionally will stand a chance to win undisclosed amounts of money.
Their names will be announced on 11 May 2018 in the different categories.
The 2017/2018 Nursing Excellence Awards is being organised by the MoHSS with the West Coast Group of Companies.
