Kavango East to host trials for U-17 regional team next week
WINDHOEK, 12 AUG (NAMPA) The Kavango East Region will next week hold trials for the football team that will compete in the 2017 Skorpion Zinc Under-17 (U-17) Cup.
The trials will be held at the Rundu Sports Stadium, with specific dates still to be announced.
The fourth edition of the tournament was re-launched at Soccer House in Windhoek last month after it took a one-year sabbatical.
It will take place in Windhoek over the weekend of 09 September and will see 14 regional U-17 football teams vie for top honours.
In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, Kavango East team manager Alfeus Shipanga said trials have been conducted in the constituencies and they have already selected 11 players from the Mukwe and Ndiyona constituencies for the final trials.
Shipanga said although the trials went well, national documents seem to be a problem because most players in the rural areas do not posses full birth certificates, which makes the selection process difficult.
We want quality players because we are drawn in a tough group, so we will be looking for players with skills and stamina, said the team manager.
He called on all players born in 2002 or thereafter to take part in the trials for the selection of the final team.
The final trials will consist of 30 players from which a final team of 20 players will be selected for the championship.
The group stages for the2017 Skorpion Zinc U-17 Cup are:
Group A: Omusati, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Kunene and //Kharas
Group B: Ohangwena, Khomas, Oshikoto, Erongo and Kavango East
Group C: Kavango West, Zambezi, Oshana, and Hardap
Group winners will automatically qualify for the semi-finals, while the runners-up in Group A and B, which have five teams each, will face each other to determine the fourth semi-finalist.
Khomas won the maiden edition in 2013, and Omusati in 2014 and 2015.
